Now that fall is in full swing, it’s the perfect time to indulge in a drink that captures the cozy essence of the season. The familiar warmth of pumpkin spice pairs beautifully with the effervescent sparkle of wine and the rich, smooth flavor of apple cider. What better way to celebrate autumn than with a Pumpkin Spice Mimosa?
Pumpkin spice has long been associated with fall, but its initial connection goes back centuries. Though Starbucks made the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) famous in 2003, early versions didn’t contain actual pumpkin. The spices—cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg, and mace—originated from spice trade routes in the Indonesian archipelago. For centuries, these spices were used in coffee and later found their way into pumpkin pie recipes.
The popular spice brand McCormick & Company began selling blends of “pumpkin spices” in the 1930s. The modern-day PSL emerged from a wave of signature espresso drinks in the '80s and '90s, with Starbucks popularizing it globally. Since its debut, the PSL has sold over 424 million units, solidifying pumpkin spice’s place as the flavor of fall. Whether it’s a Pumpkin Spice Latte or a Pumpkin Spice Mimosa, one thing is certain—this spice blend is synonymous with the season!
